Let’s talk about music, mmmm’kay? Since I am just starting out, I’ve actually been debating if I should listen to my ipod while I run.
Music is definitely motivating and can offer the push or distraction I need sometimes. One of my favorite gym moments was about a year ago when I ran my first mile without stopping (on the treadmill; still can’t do that on land … yet). It was exhilarating.
I’d almost given up. I had less than five minutes to go, but was really hurting. And then this song popped on my ipod:
I finished the mile smiling (and I may or may not have caught myself punching the air like Rocky). 😉
Of course, I’ve been listening to my ipod as I’ve transitioned outside, but I haven’t felt the same boost as before. Plus, I know that many races don’t allow you to listen to music for safety reasons. I don’t want to count on something in training that I would miss during the real event.
Then again, maybe I need all the help I can get right now!
I’m curious, what do you think? Any seasoned (or beginning) runners out there? Do you listen to music while you run? Did you find that to be an issue during a race?
I’m sure I’m over thinking this (oh, no! that would be so unlike me!) …
In the meantime, I need a new playlist, even if it’s just for the gym! I’ve been listening to the same 15 songs for way too long.
Here is my current playlist:
- Bangles – Want You
- Huey Lewis and the News – The Power of Love
- Survivor – Eye of the Tiger
- Blondie – Call Me
- Eurythmics – Sweet Dreams
- Flock of Seagulls – I Ran
- Blonde Redhead – 23
- Blondie – Atomic
- Echo and the Bunnymen – The Back of Love
- Franz Ferdinand – Take Me Out
- Franz Ferdinand – Cheating on You
- Out Hud – One Life to Live
- Outkast – B.O.B.
- Outkast – Gasoline Dreams
- Radiohead – Bodysnatchers
Obviously a wide variety, but my only requirements are that the song 1) doesn’t suck and 2) has a continuously fast pace.
So, suggestions? What do you listen to when you work out? What’s your take on the whole to ipod or not to ipod debate?
I like music if I’m on a treadmill and occasionally outside. With this heat though I’ve been starting my run when it’s dark in the mornings and finishing as it’s getting light. I enjoy letting the birds provide me with music as they are chirping their goodmorning songs. 🙂
That sounds nice! 🙂
Use it! At leat now. I use MapMyRide and highly recommend something for you as well. Get a little Nike iPod thing. Once you are well underway you can choose to use it some days, and go without for others. Maybe you could even get a Walkman like first came out when I was young.

Hahaha – I laughed really hard at the Walkman reference. I was actually pretty sad with they discontinued it last year. I think I will stick with listening to music for now – definitely at the gym, and then alternate some in the mornings. Are you still biking to work most days?
USE IT! Those sites that tell you that you won’t be able to use your iPod during races LIE! Nobody has ever even noticed me running by at a slow ass pace and listening to mine! I have 1 totes boss song you should add immediately, ’tis full of swear words and has a nice little dancy beat! It’s called, ‘Church,’ and is from T-Pain! Delightful!
Love the song! 🙂
Have you seen the Starbucks parody of this song? http://youtu.be/14qeu7JRwt0 I think you’ll like it. It’s hilarious.
You are right – that.is.HILARIOUS! 🙂
